The Position: Director, Strategic Marketing and Communication

The position is for an initial three-year period with the opportunity for renewal based on performance and availability of funding.

The Person

Name of Job: Scientist - Agroforestry and Tree domestication
ICRISAT’s Regional hub for West and Central Africa (WCA) is located in Bamako, Mali.  Scientists are also located in the research centers in Niamey, Niger, and Kano, Nigeria.  ICRISAT's work covers approximately 20 countries in the Semi-Arid Tropics (SAT) of WCA. ICRISAT is currently endowed with core competencies in the areas of agronomy, soil science, pearl millet, sorghum, and groundnut breeding, socio-economy, and GIS.  This is a joint appointment to work on a collaborative research between ICRISAT and ICRAF (International Center for Research on Agro Forestry), with Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Position: The Scientist will be a member of the multi-disciplinary research team of ICRISAT, to develop crop-tree-livestock based systems in collaboration with ILRI-ICRAF.  The responsibilities include:

    * To develop crop-tree-livestock based systems in collaboration with ILRI-ICRAF.
    * Conduct research on priority agroforestry species for both ICRISAT and ICRAF.
    * Develop efficient tree seed production/ dissemination systems in the Sahel.
    * Conduct research on agronomy and management of important agroforestry species in the Sahel.
    * Organize regional training courses on tree propagation, nursery techniques and tree seed collections and management for research and development partners with focus on multipurpose tree species in the Sahel.
    * Evaluate and maintain tree germplasm collection, including indigenous tree species.
    * Lead the research on bio-energy in the Sahel with focus on Jatropha curcas.
    * Contribute to the on-going research on firewood, wood products and fodder tree species in the Sahel.

Experience with rainfed crops particularly sorghum will be beneficial.  The candidates should have the ability to plan and conduct experiments to test research hypothesis and to synthesize the results.

Responsibilities:
    * The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team in the Agro-ecosystems program on the topic of biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) in sorghum.
    * The responsibilities include but not limited to: conducting research in the field and glasshouse to study the BNI in sweet sorghum including the genotypic differences in the sorghum cultivars in the occurrence of the BNI activity.
    * Collection of data, analysis, interpretation and writing of reports and research papers with other team members.
Duration and remuneration:  The position is tenure-based and available for three years. Attractive remuneration (an all inclusive lump sum) will be offered to the selected candidate.

ICRISAT seeks applications from Asian nationals for the position of Scientist-Genetic Resources/ Groundnut Breeding, as part of a continuing expansion in the institute’s commitment to using genetic resources and modern approaches to crop improvement.  This position is based at Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh.

ICRISAT is a non-profit, apolitical, international organization for science-based agricultural development. Established in 1972, it is an Alliance of centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and supported by more than 48 governments, foundations, and development banks. To reduce poverty, enhance crop productivity and food security and to protect the environment, ICRISAT research focuses on farming systems and crop improvement, management and utilization of sorghum, pearl millet, pigeonpea, chickpea, and groundnut in the semi-arid tropics.

The Person: PhD degree from a reputed university in plant breeding and/or genetics, with a minimum five years of post-doctoral experience as germplasm specialist/ plant breeder/geneticist in a research institute/university/ reputed private sector company.  Knowledge of quantitative genetics theory and its application in practical plant breeding of self-pollinated crops, diversity assessment, agricultural statistics, and good computer skills are essential. Theoretical knowledge of marker diversity, marker-aided selection in crop improvement will be an additional desirable requirement.  Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.  Ability to work as a member of interdisciplinary teams, including multicultural and multinational scientists, is important.

The Reward: This is a regionally recruited position in the scientific and managerial group of ICRISAT, with a competitive salary and benefits package payable in Indian rupees.
